CZECH REPUBLIC---In a deconsecrated Church of St. Roch on the grounds of the Strahov Monastery, Jiří Georg Dokoupil is exhibiting a group of new works of Jesus and Mary, heaven and hell. While the paintings ostensibly rekindle an evergreen theme of European art, Dokoupil's depictions of Jesus and the Virgin Mary at Galerie Miro are not intended as devotional icons but rather as universal visual icons, more akin to the Nike swoosh and the McDonald's golden arches than to sacred paintings of the past.
